Metering Setup

Metering lets you keep access to a distracting site, but on a meter: every minute you spend costs you, and the site re-locks when your time is up. It's the most involved thing to set up, because it works a little differently on each platform.

Enforcement should be strict

A commitment device only works if it holds when you're at your weakest. If you could switch metering off, or pull out the extension, and immediately browse freely, the whole thing would be pointless. So Ulyssify is built so the block stays up even against you. The pieces work together, and quietly removing one doesn't hand you a free pass; it just leaves the site blocked.

Mac & Windows

On the desktop, Ulyssify meters your browsing through a browser extension paired with the Ulyssify desktop app. The two act as one: the app is what actually holds the block, and the extension is how it knows which site you're on.

Setup

  1. Install the Ulyssify desktop app and sign in.
  2. Add the Ulyssify browser extension to your browser.
  3. Choose the sites you want to meter.
  4. That's it: visiting a metered site now opens it on a meter, and it re-locks when your time runs out.

Why it works this way

An extension on its own can be turned off in a second, which would make for a weak commitment. Pairing it with the desktop app is what makes metering hold. With both in place, removing or disabling the extension doesn't hand you free access; your metered sites stay locked. That's the strict-enforcement principle in practice.

iPhone & iPad

On iPhone and iPad, metering runs through Safari with the Ulyssify Safari extension. When you open a metered site, Ulyssify asks you to pass through a quick confirmation, then meters your time and re-locks the site when it's up.

Setup

  1. Install the Ulyssify app from the App Store and sign in.
  2. Enable the Ulyssify Safari extension, and allow it to run on the sites you visit.
  3. Approve the on-device prompts Ulyssify needs to hold the block.
  4. Now a metered site opens through a quick confirm, runs on a meter, and re-locks on its own.

Why only Safari

On iPhone and iPad, metering is supported in Safari only. This is a platform limitation: Safari is the one browser that lets an app like Ulyssify reliably see a real visit and hold the block. Rather than offer metering in other browsers where the block could quietly slip, we support Safari as the single sanctioned path, so the commitment stays strict.
